Thunderbolt vs USB4: What's Really Different?

Thunderbolt 4, USB4 v1.0, and USB4 v2.0 all use USB-C connectors and overlap in speed. Here's what actually separates them in the real world.

## The Connector Is the Same — the Protocol Differs

Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 both use the USB-C connector. They can share cables. But they define very different guarantees around bandwidth, feature support, and certification.

## Side-by-Side Comparison

| Feature | USB4 v1.0 | USB4 v2.0 | Thunderbolt 4 | Thunderbolt 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Max speed | 40 Gbps | 80 Gbps | 40 Gbps | 80 Gbps (120 asym) |
| Minimum speed guarantee | 20 Gbps | 40 Gbps | 40 Gbps | 80 Gbps |
| PCIe tunneling | Optional | Optional | Mandatory (32 Gbps) | Mandatory (64 Gbps) |
| DisplayPort version | DP 1.4a | DP 2.1 | DP 1.4 / 2.x | DP 2.1 |
| Daisy-chain | No | No | Yes (2 devices) | Yes |
| Power Delivery | 100W | 240W | 100W | 240W |
| Cable passive | 0.8m | 0.8m | 2m | 1m |
| Intel certification required | No | No | Yes | Yes |

## The Key Difference: Guaranteed Minimums

**USB4 v1.0** says a device *may* operate at up to 40 Gbps. There is no requirement that it actually supports 40 Gbps — a product can be 'USB4' while only delivering 20 Gbps.

**Thunderbolt 4** requires that **every certified device** delivers the full 40 Gbps, full PCIe tunneling, and two 4K display support. Intel's certification program enforces this.

In practice, a Thunderbolt 4 dock will reliably drive two 4K monitors and a fast NVMe external drive simultaneously. A USB4 dock may or may not support this.

## PCIe Tunneling: Why It Matters

PCIe tunneling lets you connect external GPUs, NVMe enclosures, and high-bandwidth devices over the cable as if they were inside the computer.

- **Thunderbolt 4**: 32 Gbps PCIe, always. External GPU docks and NVMe enclosures work.
- **USB4 v1.0**: PCIe tunneling is optional. An eGPU may not work on a USB4-only port.

## Which Cable to Buy?

Both Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 use the same cable specification. A 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 cable works for both standards. The thunderbolt logo on a cable indicates it meets Intel's spec.

- **For docks and eGPU**: Use a Thunderbolt 4 cable — it meets the full spec
- **For charging only**: Any USB-C cable rated for your wattage
- **For storage**: Thunderbolt 4 guarantees the PCIe bandwidth; USB4 may vary

## Practical Advice

| Scenario | Best Choice |
|---|---|
| Casual USB-C hub for travel | USB4 is fine |
| Permanent desk dock with 2 monitors | Thunderbolt 4 (guaranteed) |
| External SSD for video editing | Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 v2.0 |
| eGPU for gaming | Thunderbolt 4 only |
| Future-proof new laptop | Look for Thunderbolt 5 |
