## 2011: Thunderbolt 1 — Light Peak Reimagined

Originally planned as optical (codenamed Light Peak), Thunderbolt launched as a copper connection using the Mini DisplayPort connector. 10 Gbps each direction, daisy-chaining up to 6 devices. Mac-exclusive for years.

## 2013: Thunderbolt 2 — Channel Bonding

Doubled effective bandwidth to 20 Gbps by combining channels. Still Mini DP form factor, still primarily Mac. Used for professional video editing and storage arrays.

## 2015: Thunderbolt 3 — The USB-C Breakthrough

Everything changed. Thunderbolt 3 adopted the USB-C connector and doubled speed to 40 Gbps. It could carry DisplayPort, USB 3.1, and PCIe — one cable for everything. eGPU docks became possible.

## 2020: Thunderbolt 4 — Reliability Upgrade

Same 40 Gbps speed but raised the minimum requirements: mandatory dual 4K display support, 32 Gbps PCIe tunneling, and Intel VT-d security. Consistency over speed.

## 2024: Thunderbolt 5 — 80 Gbps and Beyond

80 Gbps bidirectional, or 120 Gbps asymmetric for driving three 4K displays. Based on USB4 v2.0 with Intel extensions. First appeared in Mac Studio M4 Max.
