Bevor Auto-MDI/X Standard wurde, erforderte die Verbindung zweier Computer oder Switches ein Crossover-Kabel. Moderne Ethernet-Anschlüsse erkennen und vertauschen Adern automatisch, wodurch Crossover-Kabel unnötig werden.
