PVC ist der häufigste Mantel — günstig und flexibel, aber erzeugt giftigen Rauch bei Verbrennung. TPE (thermoplastisches Elastomer) ist weicher und langlebiger für Verbraucherkabel. Nylongeflochtene Mäntel verhindern Verheddern und sind abriebfest. Plenum-zertifizierte Kabel verwenden raucharme FEP- oder LSZH-Mäntel, die von Bauvorschriften für Lüftungsräume vorgeschrieben sind.
