Ordnungsgemäße Konfektionierung folgt entweder T568A- oder T568B-Verdrahtungsstandards — deren Mischung erzeugt ein Crossover-Kabel. Schlechte Konfektionierung ist die häufigste Ursache für Ethernet-Kabelausfälle: nicht verdrillte Paare sollten unter 13mm gehalten werden, und jeder Draht muss soliden Kontakt mit den Steckerstiften haben. Abgeschirmte Kabel erfordern Erdung der Abschirmung an den Konfektionierungspunkten.
