Los cables pasivos transportan señales sin electrónicos; los cables activos incorporan chips para amplificar o regenerar señales para distancias más largas.
Los cables pasivos son más simples, baratos y bidireccionales. Los cables activos contienen ICs retimer o redriver que regeneran la señal, permitiendo tendidos de 5m o más a velocidades completas de USB4 o Thunderbolt. Los cables activos son típicamente direccionales (extremos host/dispositivo marcados) y cuestan 2-5 veces más. Para tendidos menores a 1-2m, los cables pasivos siempre son suficientes.
