Passive cables बिना electronics के signals carry करती हैं; active cables में chips होते हैं जो लंबी दूरी के लिए signals को boost या regenerate करते हैं।

Passive cables सरल, सस्ती और bidirectional होती हैं। Active cables में retimer या redriver ICs होते हैं जो signal को regenerate करते हैं, जिससे full USB4 या Thunderbolt speeds पर 5m या अधिक runs संभव होती हैं। Active cables आमतौर पर directional होती हैं (host/device ends marked) और 2-5 गुना अधिक महंगी होती हैं। 1-2m से कम runs के लिए passive cables हमेशा पर्याप्त होती हैं।
