Kabel pasif lebih sederhana, lebih murah, dan bidirectional. Kabel aktif mengandung IC retimer atau redriver yang meregenerasi sinyal, memungkinkan jangkauan 5m atau lebih dengan kecepatan USB4 atau Thunderbolt penuh.
