MIDI mentransmisikan pesan kontrol, bukan audio sebenarnya. MIDI tradisional menggunakan konektor DIN 5-pin pada 31,25 kbaud. USB MIDI modern berjalan melalui kabel USB standar pada bandwidth yang jauh lebih tinggi. MIDI 2.0 menambah resolusi lebih tinggi (velocity 32-bit) dan komunikasi bidirectional, masih bekerja melalui koneksi USB-C.
