Multi-gigabit internet is arriving in homes. Here's how 2.5G and 10G Ethernet work, what cables and switches you need, and how to plan a future-proof home network.
## Why Multi-Gigabit Matters Now
Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) was the home networking standard for over two decades. In 2025, it's becoming a bottleneck:
- ISPs are deploying 2.5G and 5G fiber-to-home services in many markets
- Wi-Fi 7 access points have backhaul speeds of 2.5-10 Gbps
- NAS devices and internal storage (NVMe SSDs) can easily saturate 1 Gbps
The wired backbone of your home network is the next upgrade.
## The Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Landscape

Cat5e (installed in most homes after 2000) supports 2.5GBASE-T at 100m and 5GBASE-T at shorter distances. Test your existing cables with a cable tester before purchasing switches.
### New Runs: Always Cat6a
If you are pulling new cable — through walls, ceiling, or conduit — always use Cat6a:
- Supports 10G at the full 100m specification
- Shielded options available for interference-heavy environments
- Marginal cost increase over Cat6 for 20+ year improvement in headroom
Use **solid-core Cat6a** for in-wall runs and **stranded Cat6a** for patch cables.
## 2.5G Switches: The Sweet Spot Upgrade
A 5-port 2.5G unmanaged switch costs $50-80 and gives every device a 2.5x speed bump over Gigabit, using your existing cables.
**Recommended**:
