## The Connector Is the Same — the Protocol Differs
Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 both use the USB-C connector. They can share cables. But they define very different guarantees around bandwidth, feature support, and certification.

## The Key Difference: Guaranteed Minimums
**USB4 v1.0** says a device *may* operate at up to 40 Gbps. There is no requirement that it actually supports 40 Gbps — a product can be 'USB4' while only delivering 20 Gbps.
**Thunderbolt 4** requires that **every certified device** delivers the full 40 Gbps, full PCIe tunneling, and two 4K display support. Intel's certification program enforces this.
In practice, a Thunderbolt 4 dock will reliably drive two 4K monitors and a fast NVMe external drive simultaneously. A USB4 dock may or may not support this.
## PCIe Tunneling: Why It Matters
PCIe tunneling lets you connect external GPUs, NVMe enclosures, and high-bandwidth devices over the cable as if they were inside the computer.
- **Thunderbolt 4**: 32 Gbps PCIe, always. External GPU docks and NVMe enclosures work.
- **USB4 v1.0**: PCIe tunneling is optional. An eGPU may not work on a USB4-only port.
## Which Cable to Buy?
Both Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 use the same cable specification. A 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 cable works for both standards. The thunderbolt logo on a cable indicates it meets Intel's spec.
