Lane

Signal & Data

A single differential signal pair within a cable, with total bandwidth scaling by the number of lanes used.

USB4 and Thunderbolt use up to four high-speed lanes. Each lane carries 10 or 20 Gbps depending on the generation. DisplayPort Alt Mode can borrow lanes from USB data for video, creating a tradeoff between display bandwidth and data speed. USB-C cables with all four lanes wired enable the highest speeds.
