The number of times per second a display updates its image, measured in Hz, directly affecting cable bandwidth requirements.
Higher refresh rates (120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz) produce smoother motion for gaming and video. Each doubling of refresh rate doubles the required bandwidth: 4K@60Hz needs ~18 Gbps, 4K@120Hz needs ~36 Gbps. This is why 4K@120Hz requires HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC. Most consumers need 60Hz; gamers benefit from 120Hz+.
