Shielding (STP vs UTP)

Networking

Whether an Ethernet cable has metallic shielding around its wire pairs to block interference.

UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) is standard for most home and office installs. STP and S/FTP add foil or braided shields for environments with heavy EMI (factories, near power lines). Shielded cables require proper grounding or they can actually increase noise.
