Os dois níveis padrão de força de sinal de áudio analógico: nível de linha (~1V) para interconexão de equipamentos, nível de microfone (~1-100mV) de microfones.
Conectar um sinal de nível de microfone a uma entrada de nível de linha produz áudio quase inaudível; conectar nível de linha a uma entrada de microfone causa distorção. Pré-amplificadores elevam o nível do microfone ao nível de linha. O tipo de cabo importa: XLR tipicamente transporta nível de microfone (balanceado), enquanto TRS e RCA transportam nível de linha. Usar o tipo errado de cabo pode introduzir ruído devido à incompatibilidade de impedância.
