Passive cables carry signals without electronics; active cables embed chips to boost or regenerate signals for longer distances.
Passive cables are simpler, cheaper, and bidirectional. Active cables contain retimer or redriver ICs that regenerate the signal, allowing runs of 5m or more at full USB4 or Thunderbolt speeds. Active cables are typically directional (marked host/device ends) and cost 2-5x more. For runs under 1-2m, passive cables are always sufficient.
