Hot-Pluggable

Standards & Protocols

The ability to connect or disconnect a cable while devices are powered on without causing damage or data loss.

USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt are all hot-pluggable — you can safely plug and unplug without powering down. Older standards like VGA and DVI technically are not, though most modern implementations tolerate it. Hot-plug events trigger device enumeration, EDID exchange, and power negotiation automatically.
