A set of rules governing how data is formatted, transmitted, and received over a cable connection.

Protocols define the language devices speak over a cable. USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, and Ethernet are all protocols with specific rules for signaling, error handling, and device negotiation. A single cable type like USB-C can carry multiple different protocols depending on the connected devices.
