EDID (Extended Display Identification Data)

Video & Display

A data structure that a display sends to the source device describing its capabilities (resolution, refresh rate, color).

When you plug in a monitor, it transmits its EDID over the cable so the GPU knows what resolutions and refresh rates are supported. Faulty EDID communication causes wrong resolutions or no signal. EDID emulators and KVM switches sometimes corrupt this data, requiring manual resolution override.
