The two standard analog audio signal strengths: line level (~1V) for equipment interconnection, mic level (~1-100mV) from microphones.
Connecting a mic-level signal to a line-level input produces barely audible audio; connecting line-level to a mic input causes distortion. Preamps boost mic level to line level. Cable type matters: XLR typically carries mic level (balanced), while TRS and RCA carry line level. Using the wrong cable type can introduce noise due to impedance mismatch.
