Tunneling Protocol

Standards & Protocols

A standard for encapsulating one data protocol within another, enabling multi-function cables.

Thunderbolt and USB4 use tunneling to carry USB, DisplayPort, and PCIe data over a single cable simultaneously. The controller chip at each end encapsulates and de-encapsulates the different protocols. This is what allows a single USB-C connection to a dock to provide video, data, and charging all at once.
