Termination (Ethernet)

Networking

The process of attaching an RJ45 connector or keystone jack to the end of an Ethernet cable.

Proper termination follows either T568A or T568B wiring standards — mixing them creates a crossover. Poor termination is the most common cause of Ethernet cable failures: untwisted pairs should be kept under 13mm, and each wire must make solid contact with the connector pins. Shielded cables require grounding the shield at termination points.
