Le S/PDIF transporte du PCM stéréo non compressé ou du son surround 5.1 compressé (Dolby Digital, DTS). La variante optique (TOSLINK) est immunisée contre les boucles de masse et les interférences électromagnétiques. Limitée à ~1,5 Mbps, elle ne peut pas transporter le Dolby TrueHD ou Atmos sans perte — l'eARC est nécessaire pour cela.
