DisplayPort or HDMI? 1.4 or 2.1? Cable length and quality matter for 144Hz, 240Hz, and 4K gaming monitors. Here's how to choose.
## The Monitor Cable Decision Tree
Getting the wrong cable for your gaming monitor means locked frame rates, missing features, or no signal at all. Start here:
1. **What port does your GPU / console have?**
2. **What port does your monitor have?**
3. **What resolution and refresh rate are you targeting?**
## DisplayPort vs HDMI: Which Is Better for Gaming?
Both standards can deliver excellent gaming performance in 2025. The right choice depends on your hardware.
### Choose DisplayPort when
- Your GPU is from a PC (AMD or NVIDIA)
- You want 1440p@240Hz or 4K@240Hz (only available on DP 2.1)
- You want G-Sync compatibility (works over DP and HDMI on most monitors)
- You plan to daisy-chain multiple monitors
### Choose HDMI when
- You're connecting a game console (PS5, Xbox Series X) — these have HDMI only
- Your monitor has HDMI but no DisplayPort
- You need to switch between PC and console on the same monitor
## Which Version Do You Need?
### DisplayPort
| Target | Minimum DP Version |
|---|---|
| 1080p@240Hz | DP 1.2 |
| 1440p@144Hz | DP 1.4 |
| 1440p@240Hz | DP 1.4 (requires DSC) |
| 4K@144Hz | DP 1.4 (requires DSC) |
| 4K@240Hz | DP 2.1 |
Most current GPUs (RTX 3000 / RX 6000 and newer) output DP 1.4. DP 2.1 is available on RTX 4000 series and RX 7000 series.
### HDMI
| Target | Minimum HDMI Version |
|---|---|
| 1080p@120Hz | HDMI 2.0 |
| 4K@60Hz | HDMI 2.0 |
| 4K@120Hz | HDMI 2.1 |
| 4K@144Hz+ | HDMI 2.1 |
## Cable Quality and Length
**Length**: Keep gaming cables under 2m. Signal integrity matters more at high refresh rates. Past 3m, you risk intermittent signal at 4K@120Hz+ without an active cable.
**Certification**: Look for cables with official certification — VESA-certified for DisplayPort, HDMI Forum-certified (Ultra High Speed) for HDMI. Budget cables without certification can cause sporadic signal loss at high refresh rates.
## Recommended Cables by Scenario
| Scenario | Our Pick |
|---|---|
| PC to 1440p@144Hz monitor | Any DP 1.4 cable, Club 3D or Cable Matters |
| PC to 4K@120Hz monitor | DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.1, VESA/HDMI certified |
| PC to 4K@240Hz monitor | DP 2.1 UHBR 20 |
| PS5 / Xbox to 4K TV | Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 |
| Nintendo Switch in dock | Any HDMI cable (Switch max is 1080p60) |
## What Not to Buy
- **'HDMI 2.0 cable'** — HDMI cables have speed ratings, not version numbers; look for Ultra High Speed (48 Gbps)
- **Ultra-long passive cables** for high refresh rate — buy shorter
- **Suspiciously cheap DP 2.1 cables** — fake spec claims are common
