Cable के द्वारा travel करते समय signal strength की gradual loss, जो distance और frequency के साथ बढ़ती है।

Attenuation को decibels (dB) में measure किया जाता है और यही मुख्य कारण है कि cables के maximum length specifications होते हैं। Copper cables में higher frequencies पर अधिक attenuation होता है, यही कारण है कि 40 Gbps USB4 cables USB 2.0 cables से छोटी होती हैं। Fiber optic cables में बहुत कम attenuation होता है, जो kilometer-scale runs को enable करता है।
