Encoding

Signal & Data

The method used to represent digital data as electrical signals on a cable, affecting usable bandwidth.

Different encoding schemes trade raw bit rate for reliability. USB 3.x uses 8b/10b encoding, meaning 20% overhead (10 Gbps raw yields 8 Gbps usable). USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 use 128b/132b with only ~3% overhead, making far more of the raw bandwidth available for data.
