Jitter means data bits arrive slightly early or late compared to the expected clock timing. At 40 Gbps, each bit window is only 25 picoseconds — even tiny jitter can cause bit errors. Cable quality, connector alignment, and EMI all contribute to jitter. Retimer chips in active cables clean up jitter by regenerating the signal with fresh timing.
