S/PDIF carries uncompressed stereo PCM or compressed 5.1 surround sound (Dolby Digital, DTS). The optical variant (TOSLINK) is immune to ground loops and EMI. Limited to ~1.5 Mbps, it cannot carry lossless Dolby TrueHD or Atmos — eARC is needed for that.
