The two main types of fiber optic cable, differing in core size, distance capability, and cost.
Multi-mode fiber has a larger core (50 or 62.5 microns) and uses cheaper LED transceivers, suitable for runs up to ~550m at 10 Gbps. Single-mode fiber has a tiny 9-micron core and uses laser transceivers, reaching 10+ km. Data centers typically use multi-mode within buildings and single-mode between buildings.
