Chroma Subsampling

Video & Display

A compression technique that reduces color data resolution while keeping brightness detail, expressed as ratios like 4:4:4 or 4:2:0.

Human eyes are more sensitive to brightness than color, so chroma subsampling discards some color information. 4:4:4 is full color (best for text and desktop use), 4:2:2 halves horizontal color resolution (fine for video), and 4:2:0 quarters total color data. A 4K@60Hz signal at 4:2:0 fits in HDMI 2.0 bandwidth; 4:4:4 needs HDMI 2.1.
