The number of bits used per pixel to represent color, determining how many distinct colors can be displayed.
8-bit color provides 16.7 million colors; 10-bit provides over 1 billion. Higher color depth requires more bandwidth: 4K@60Hz at 10-bit needs roughly 25% more bandwidth than 8-bit. HDR content typically requires 10-bit color depth. HDMI 2.0 supports 10-bit at 4K@60Hz with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling; HDMI 2.1 handles 10-bit at full 4:4:4.
