The number of bits per audio sample, determining dynamic range — 16-bit for CD, 24-bit for studio recording.
Each additional bit doubles the resolution of amplitude measurement. 16-bit audio provides 96 dB of dynamic range (CD quality). 24-bit provides 144 dB, exceeding human hearing limits and giving engineers more headroom for mixing. 32-bit float is used internally by DAWs but rarely transmitted over cables.
