DC power (typically 48V) sent through a microphone cable to power condenser microphones.
Phantom power travels over the same XLR cable as the audio signal, eliminating the need for a separate power supply. It is transparent to dynamic microphones which simply ignore it. Accidentally sending phantom power to ribbon microphones can damage them. Balanced cables (XLR) are required; unbalanced cables cannot carry phantom power safely.
