Half Duplex

Signal & Data

A communication mode where data can only travel in one direction at a time, alternating between send and receive.

Half duplex requires devices to take turns transmitting, reducing effective throughput. Early Ethernet hubs operated in half duplex, leading to collisions. USB 2.0 is half duplex — the host and device cannot send data simultaneously, which limits real-world performance.
